Trefzger’s has been lucky enough to be involved in your special day for over 11 decades! Take a stroll down memory lane with us and explore how much the trends have changed!
Weddings Through the Decades
1900s-1910s
This is the oldest Trefzger’s wedding cake that we have a picture of! Simple, one tier cakes were all the rage at the time, with the decorations added on top being the main focus. Fresh flowers were a favorite decoration, along with delicate sculptures as shown here!
Extra Fun Fact: Most wedding cakes at this time were made and decorated at home by the bride, and it wasn’t mainstream for bakeries to make wedding cakes until almost 20 years later! That’s what makes this picture so cool!
1930s-1940s
Bakeries started to make wedding cakes regularly, and the 1930s is when cake tastings started to be offered! Bride and groom cake toppers started to become popular, and layers of icing decoration were a huge hit. This is also around the time when the modern tradition of the bride and groom cutting the cake together became popular!
1950s
Not only were bride and groom toppers on almost every wedding cake at this time, some couples opted to include the whole bridal party! With the end of ingredient rationing from the war, came the boom of extravagant decoration.
1960s
Celebrity weddings started to influence wedding cakes a lot more. It was all about the height at this time!
1970s
Almond paste became very popular at this time and was used in cake flavorings as well as marzipan, which was rolled out in sheets and used to cover the cake. This is also when buttercream started to make its way to the top of the icing list, which is now one of the things we are most known for! Bright gold and yellow decoration was a huge hit.
1980s
This decade brought in the idea of straying away from the traditional vertical wedding cakes. More and more cakes started to be offset or have varying heights, all connected by plastic stairs, bridges, and pillars. Some cakes even had working water fountains in them!
We still have these kinds of decorations, and have been able to use them on some cakes today! Even the water fountain!
1990s
Fondant was the favorite choice for cake coverings, which contributed to the strong trend of cakes having rounded edges. This is when couples started to get a little more personalized with their cakes, some choosing to have their cake toppers represent their occupations or things they had in common, other than the traditional bride and groom!
2000s
It started to become more popular for couples to match the cake to their decoration colors or gown. Square cakes started to become popular, making the shape of the cake be the focal point, rather than the decoration. Cupcakes also started to make their way into weddings at this time, allowing couples to have the small cakes to themselves and skip cake cuttings almost completely!
2010s
This decade brought multiple new things into the wedding cake realm. Some couples opted for the classy watercolor or marbling designs with gold flake accents, while others went the rustic route with naked cakes and fresh fruits. This decade also brought in the boom of non-traditional cakes, using cinnamon rolls or cheesecakes in place of cake!
2020s
We are now in a time of so many diverse and unique wedding cakes, all catering to the individual tastes of each new couple. It is so exciting to see how each cake represents those who order it, and how they continue to pull inspiration from the decades before it. We are eager to see what new trends will come out of this decade!
